“I have to clean the barn and fetch some fresh corn and oats.” said Sam
“What next?”
“The new horse seems so restless. He needs to be exercised.”
“I noticed the grey mare was rather unsteady.”
“We need to look into it. She might have stepped on some stones.” said Sam
“Why can’t Carson do his work? He is the groom, after all.”
“Oh! The owner does not trust humans. That is why we are here.” said Sam, the workhorse, as he reached for the hose pipe.

The miserable life of a workhorse! Thank you, Sandra.

cant blame the owner but …
yes, the owner is a human too..but that is his point of view:) Thank you, Sharmishtha
It’s true that most humans are stupid when it comes to animals. Nice perspective.
Thank you so much
The animals can sense more than we give them credit for. We should try to understand their moods and needs better.
yes.. well, an indifferent groom could cause permanent damage to a horse’s health. Thank you so much for commenting

I won’t make a workhorse joke. The story worked very well. And a lot of story there in 100 words. However, the mane thing is…..
Hi, Thanks for reading and liking it…
Yes that was the mane thing.

Thank you, Tom. Appreciate your commenting on this story
No problem would have been here sooner just been busy this weekend!
Animals can teach humans a lot about caring! Your story raises questions and there’s a backstory to this. I wonder why the horses’ owner employs Carson if he doesn’t trust him? Why doesn’t the owner trust humans? Can you send Sam and pals to do my housework? 🙂
The owner probably is indebted to Carson in some way, that is why he employs him. Some bad incidents in the past have robbed him of his trust in humans. Sure, Sam would like to come over if he gets a lot of tasty corns and oats:)) Thank you so much for reading and commenting:)
Nice little twist at the end and I enjoyed the humour , both in the prose and in the photo.
Thank you, Mary:)
